Emmie finds shelter in the arms of a soldier, but her secret could drive them apart.
When Emmie Croftner answered the door to her late husband's home, she discovered a terrible truth. A woman she's never met reveals that she and Emmie shared the same husband and that the bigamist had never divorced his first wife. The home and farm are not Emmie's property after all.
Suddenly displaced and powerless, Emmie realizes she can't stay in Wabash, Indiana, any longer. She makes for Fort Laramie, Wyoming, where her friend Sarah Montgomery and a new beginning await her. But when she arrives, she discovers she's carrying a child, conceived before her husband's death. Was the new start she'd hoped for only a mirage?
At Fort Laramie, a soldier named Isaac Liddle begins to court Emmie, prompting her to wonder whether she could ever really be his--and whether she dares to tell him she is carrying another man's baby.

My Thoughts:
Note: As the fourth book in a series, please proceed knowing that this review will contain spoilers for all previous books.
I put book three down wondering where the next installment could possibly take us after such a happy ending for Sarah and Rand. The answer? In a totally different direction. Well, I should say 'totally' different. We are introduced to a new main character, but Sarah and Fort Laramie are still a part of this book. The focus is now on Emmie, evil Ben Croftner's sister. Unlike her brother, Emmie is quiet, sweet, and in need of Sarah's help.
Emmie instantly falls upon bad times. Her husband of just a few months has died and along comes his first wife and son. Emmie now has no family, friends, or home. She wildly sets out to Fort Laramie, hoping that Sarah will be able to take her in for awhile. Settling into frontier life is more enjoyable than she expected, but she soon meets Issac, Rand's good friend. They both find themselves interested in each other, but can Emmie ever trust another man? Especially one who is just as charismatic.
I instantly felt for Emmie and her poor situation which I think has helped me connect with her much faster than I ever did with Sarah. I hope this connection continues through the next two books. The one thing that annoyed me about Emmie? I wish she would just confide in Sarah! Confessing her situation to Sarah would make her life much easier.
Consider this book a shoot-off series of the first three installments. Different main character, but same basic bones. I am suuuper interested in how Emmie will deal with the baby news and falling for Issac. Book five why are you not here yet?! 3.5 stars.
