Publisher: Bethany House Publishers
Publishing Date: May 5, 2015
Former Marine Jake Porter has far deeper scars than the one that marks his face. He struggles with symptoms of PTSD, lives a solitary life, and avoids relationships.
When Lyndie James, Jake’s childhood best friend, lands back in Holley, Texas, Jake cautiously hires her to exercise his Thoroughbreds. Lyndie is tender-hearted, fiercely determined, and afraid of nothing, just like she was as a child. Jake pairs her with Silver Leaf, a horse full of promise but lacking in results, hoping she can solve the mystery of the stallion’s reluctance to run.
Though Jake and Lyndie have grown into very different adults, the bond that existed during their childhood still ties them together. Against Jake’s will, Lyndie’s sparkling, optimistic personality begins to tear down the walls he’s built around his heart. A glimmer of the hope he’d thought he’d lost returns, but fears and regrets still plague him. Will Jake ever be able to love Lyndie like she deserves, or is his heart too shattered to mend?
I received a copy of this book from the publisher via Litfuse Publicity in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
My Thoughts:
In the book blogging world, it is quite common to run across 'book boyfriends', the fictional men that female readers swoon over. I've very rarely swooned over a fictional boy (THIS might be an exception. Or this dude), instead I have more frequently found myself wishing to be best friends with the leading lady. Lyndie is my new book bestie.
Lyndie was SUPER adorable. She makes her living exercising horses and writing children's books. As such, she is constantly dreaming up adorable new stories about fairies, princes, and unicorns. Her new best friend lives in the apartment below her, together Lyndie and Amber meet weekly over chocolately mochas with sprinkles to talk books and love lives. Amber has a son, Jasper, who is building a 'hero house' (think fairy house) with Lyndie out of an old tree stump. Plus, Lyndie is a touch of a hermit-y introvert.
Her most endearing quality is her need to help the hurting. Lyndie simply can't pass up a hurting animal, needing to heal it in some way. It has gotten her far in the world of thoroughbreds, but is also in breaking down Jake Porter's stone walls.
Jake returned from Iraq with both physical and emotional wounds that haunt his sleeping hours. Now the only girl he has ever cared for is back in town and suddenly the emotions and fears are bringing him to his breaking point.
Together with the healing power of God, and a few steamy kisses, the two will find out if love is really enough. 'A Love Like Ours' was ADORABLE with a touch of steam and whimsy. You will put this book down with a new book bestie and a new book boyfriend, if you are into Tall, Dark, and Brooding. Becky Wade's latest is a MUST read for fans of contemporary romances with a hint of cowboy and a boatload of fun. 4.5 stars.
