Summary from Goodreads:

In the small town of Woodsville, self-assured Ruby Hood becomes tangled in more than traditional teenage angst. With the Homecoming Dance looming, everything at Woodsville High appears normal, but things are not as they seem. Ruby meets a cute boy with a lopsided grin, Dylan Hunter. She flirts shamelessly with the football star, Kent Wolf, and finds herself in a barrage of harsh verbal altercations with his stunning yet wicked sister, Kayla Wolf. Thankfully, she finds solace in her friend, Lilly Fair. Through a series of odd and painful events, Ruby discovers her true calling and the responsibilities that come with her new power and position. Despite her heartache and sorrow, will Ruby find the inner strength not only to protect herself, but also to keep the Wood safe at all cost?

Homecoming: Ruby and the Mayor
“Oh goodness, Mayor Wolf! I didn’t realize you were out here,” Ruby lied, pasting on her best smile. She had known the mayor for years, but she had never been particularly comfortable around him.
The Mayor looked at Ruby and his face softened. “Ah, Ruby Hood. How have you been, my dear?” he asked. Then, he stepped closer to the young couple, extending his hand to Ruby. “You look lovely this evening. That cloak is stunning,” he said, eyeing her oddly.
“I’m fine. Thank you, Mayor. The cloak was a gift from my grandmother,” she said politely, shaking his hand. Then, she took a step closer to Dylan before tightening her cloak around herself protectively.
“I saw the kids and Mrs. Wolf rush off. Is everything okay?”

The Mayor put on his most congenial political face and laughed. “Oh, yes, my dear. Just a small family squabble. Nothing to concern your pretty little head about,” he chortled. He was just as handsome as his son, but in an older, more distinguished way. It was obvious where Kent got his eyes. In his heyday, the Mayor had also been an amazing athlete. The only real trait that set the father and son apart was the graying temples and sideburns of the older Wolf. “And who is your date, Ruby? I don’t believe I’ve had the privilege of meeting this fine young man. I’m Mayor Wolf,” he said loudly, smiling and extended his hand.
