It is 1941 and America teeters on the brink of war. Outgoing naval officer Ensign Jim Avery escorts British convoys across the North Atlantic in a brand-new destroyer, the USS Atwood. Back on shore, Boston Navy Yard secretary Mary Stirling does her work quietly and efficiently, happy to be out of the limelight. Yet, despite her reserved nature, she never could back down from a challenge. When evidence of sabotage on the Atwood is found, Jim and Mary must work together to uncover the culprit. A bewildering maze of suspects emerges, and Mary is dismayed to find that even someone close to her is under suspicion. With the increasing pressure, Jim and Mary find that many new challenges--and dangers--await them.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher via Litfuse Publicity in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own. Buy a copy today!

My Thoughts:
Here in 'Waters Deep' Mary is a secretary who can walk about the Naval Shipyard undetected. When someone starts sabotaging the ships, Mary starts taking notes for the FBI. It seems like everyone is framing everyone and the puzzle pieces just aren't fitting together. Soon she is sharing all her notes and thoughts with her old high school acquaintance, Jim. With two older brothers in the Navy, Jim in content to let himself float along not needing or wanting to make a name for himself. Jim keeps his eyes and ears open aboard the ship for Mary's investigation, but soon he has problems of his own. He is shipping out and the possibility of meeting a German U-boat is very real.

There is so much to say about this book that I feel my thoughts are all scattered. Let me start first with the plot. There truly was  good mix of mystery, intrigue and romance. The time period, right before WWII 'officially' broke out, certainly lends a hand to the intrigue. People were being divided into pro-war or anti-war groups. Both Jews and Germans were being targeted and under almost constant suspicion. Sundin does a good job of twisting and turning the story, so that, just like Mary, we are suspecting one character or the other up to the very end. I also want to note that I enjoyed the way the author spread out the timeline giving us the date for each chapter. It ensured that a story that need time and space to develop, received just that.

Mary and Jim themselves are good characters and they struggle with some big issues. Mary had a traumatic, humiliating experience as a child and she now avoids all and any public notice. Her ability to talk down to herself had her constantly feeling unworthy of love. This drove me a bit bonkers. I just wanted to give her a good shake as we watched her trying to destroy her own happiness.

Jim's struggle was also very real and in no way secondary to Mary's. Jim is content to let life float by. He never sees this as an issue until it is go time and he has to make some very tough decisions on the spot. Jim also realizes that if he continues to float through life, he could miss out on the best thing in his life.

So overall, liked! And I like that I can read summaries for the next two books on Sundin's website! It makes me pretty excited for the rest of the series. I am also feeling like I should pick up another series by Sundin. Her website exclaims her love for WWII and I can feel it spill over into me. If you enjoy a good Nancy Drew vibe, some good 1940's romance, or anything involving WWII, 'Through Waters Deep' is your very next choice. 4 stars.
