What to do if I Don't Like My Current Book

Now, for this week's question:

How do you handle a book you don’t like? Do you DNF or do you power through?

I am torn on this topic. I always try to make sure I read more than just the first few pages. Sometimes books do start off badly, but then pick up carrying me through to a spectacular ending. If a book is still fighting for my attention and I couldn't care less about the plot, I DNF. Eep. I am finally admitting it, even to myself! Since starting my book blog though, I have more than enough books to be reading and there just isn't enough time in the world to waste on a bad book.

BUT! Sometimes I do power through. Right now I am reading And All The Stars and I knew after the first three chapters that I wouldn't like it. That unless a miracle happened I wouldn't be rating it above a two. But the plot itself is interesting. In more talented hands, the book could have some great potential, especially since I just ran into a plot twist. So I am powering through, just for the sake of plot. Sigh.

How about you?? DNF or power through?? Can't wait to read all your answers!

  1. It's hard to judge whether I'll like a book especially when a preview isn't available, like with ARCs.

I'm sorry that AND ALL THE STARS isn't working for you. I have it on my TBR list. I look forward to reading your review, negative or not, when you finish. :)

Usually I really do try to power through... I just think I can do it. Unless it's taking me days to read it then I finally just quit.

  3. I usually stay for 150 pages and if I don't like it, I leave it. If I do stay, it's usually for the characters.

  6. I like that firm point: 150 pages. That is a great idea!

I don't like DNFing, I really don't - but if a book is bad, I'll do it. I like to enjoy my books, not struggle through them.

    Happy Friday!

  8. I always continue reading and I power through. I always feel like there's something waiting for me later in the book. I love your blog design! I'm a Bloglovin follower.

  9. Usually I will give it 50-100 pages as I don't have the time to power through. I'm picky about what I read so only have 1 DNF so far though!

  10. Agreed. I feel as though with self publishing becoming more prevalent..I will sadly be DNFing more books. I support self publishing, but it is just not for everyone!

  11. You are a braver stronger person than I :)) I used to never DNF, but I also feel like I didn't have reasons to DNF. Now I am trying to branch out more in my reading, and finding a lot of stuff I don't like!
Thanks for the follow, I will return!

  12. I don't have very many DNF books either. I try to make sure a book is worth my time before starting...but I am also trying to branch out in my reading! Tough decisions! Thanks for stopping by my FF!

  13. I hate to not finish a book. It does happen occasionally though. I always give it my best effort before giving up.

  14. I know. If I choose to DNF, I feel bad about it for awhile. Until I fall in love with a better book :))

  15. I understand. Too many books, but I do feel a bit guilty when I don't finish one. Even if the next book I pick up is ten times better. I usually file the old book under maybe later -- but in my had it is more like DNF
